Implementation

A Steering Group, representing both the observational and the research communities was set up. This group launched the Polar Prediction Project in early 2012.

Since then, preparatory meetings were held and an Implementation Plan with input from the polar research community was adopted in January 2013. This plan contains the objectives, the project plan, the time schedule, linkages and foreseen instruments.

A Science Plan provides the scientific basis for the implementation of the Polar Prediction Project.

One of the major project activities is the Year of Polar Prediction. This intensive observing and modelling effort is planned for mid 2017 to mid 2019.

Science workshops on polar prediction are another means of implementing the project.

The Polar Predictions Project carries a strong educative component and cooperates closely with
APECS, the association of polar early career scientists.

An International Coordination Office (ICO) has been established. Hosted by the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, Bremerhaven, the ICO coordinates activities in polar prediction and supports the planning and implementation of the project.
