28-29 June 2017

Second YOPP-SH meeting at NCAR, Boulder, Colorado, United States.

The second meeting of the YOPP in the Southern Hemisphere (YOPP-SH) planning committee was held on 28-29 June, 2017 at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colorado, United States, in conjunction with the 12th Workshop on Antarctic Meteorology and Climate and the Southern Ocean Regional Panel (SORP) meeting. Modeling efforts such as the Antarctic Mesoscale Prediction System AMPS, observations both at Antarctic stations and during various field campaigns, as well as involvement of Southern Ocean community were discussed. A joint session together with the Southern Ocean Regional Panel (SORP) took place on Thursday, June 29th. The report on the meeting can be downloaded here.

YOPP Special Session at the 9th International Congress on Arctic Social Science (ICASS IX), Umeå, Sweden.

The Societal and Economic Research and Applications (SERA) sub-committee of the Polar Prediction Project (PPP) will hold a special session at the upcoming ICASS (International Congress on Arctic Social Science) conference. ICASS IX takes place from June 8 - 12, 2017 in Umeå, Sweden. For more information can be accessed here.

PPP-SERA meeting at University of Alaska, Fairbanks, Alaska, United States.

The third meeting of the PPP sub-committee Societal and Economic Research and Applications (PPP-SERA) was held from 05-09 April, 2017 at the University of Alaska Fairbanks in Fairbanks, Alaska. Focus of the meeting was to finalize a scoping document entitled "Navigating Weather, Water, Ice and Climate Information for Safe Polar Mobilities" which sets the base for the implementation of an action and research response plan envisaged for the social science contribution to the Year of Polar Prediction.

Year of Polar Prediction side meeting at Arctic Science Summit Week 2017, Prague, Czech Republic.

A Year of Polar Prediction side meeting took place on Friday, 31 March, 2017 during the Arctic Science Summit Week held in Prague, Czech Republic. PPP Steering Group member Jun Inoue and ICO project officer Kirstin Werner gave an update on the current state of planning of various activities during the Year of Polar Prediction which will be launched officially in May this year. In the ASSW2017 session entitled "Project management in the Arctic science – the unknown driver of changes" Kirstin Werner and Luisa Cristini who is project manager for the EU Horizon2020 project APPLICATE both reported on project management within polar prediction research.

Polar Prediction Workshop in Bremerhaven, Germany.

From 27-30 March, 2017, the 4th Polar Prediction Workshop was held at the German Maritime Museum (Deutsches Schifffahrtsmuseum, www.dsm.museum) in Bremerhaven, Germany. The Polar Climate Predictability Initiative (WCRP-PCPI), the Polar Prediction Project (WWRP-PPP), the Sea Ice Prediction Network (SIPN), and the Sea Ice Model Intercomparison Project (SIMIP) were pleased to welcome about 80 international sea-ice experts who discussed on environmental predictions in the polar regions on subseasonal to interannual timescales, thereby helping to build a "seamless“ polar prediction community. YOPP Open Session and PPP Steering Group Meeting #8, NCEP, College Park, Maryland, USA.

A YOPP Open Session will be held on Monday morning, 27 February, 2017, at the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) in College Park, Maryland, USA. The Open Session will be followed by the eighth PPP Steering Group meeting.

The YOPP Open Session, which will be held in the morning of 27 February, 2017 (YOPP Open Session agenda) provides an overview about the current level of YOPP planning and encourages discussion with the US community interested in YOPP. The agenda for the 8th meeting of the WMO WWRP PPP Steering Group, held from 27 February to 01 March is available here. Presentations of the meeting are now available for download.
