The Processes Task Team (TT) consists of members from the PPP Steering Group and experts interested in advancing the understanding of Polar processes and how they are represented in models that are used to predict the Polar environment on time scales from hours to seasons. The focus is on small-scale parameterized processes that are of importance for weather, sub-seasonal to seasonal, and climate models. An important component, specific to the Polar regions, is to understand and improve the coupling between the atmosphere and a snow and/or sea ice covered surface.
The improvement of process representations in complex models requires the integration of diverse knowledge of the key processes and their interactions gained from theoretical insights and observations. Understanding of model statistical behaviour comes from confronting models with observations. To facilitate the uptake of observations, the TT is working on the organisation of existing observational data so they are easily accessible and simple to use for modelling teams, which is a central goal for the Processes TT. This work is done together with the Verification and Data TTs within the subproject YOPPsiteMIP. The intercomparison concept is based on developing a well-defined file format and compatible semantics applicable across models and observations: Merged Model Data Files (MMDFs) and Merged Observatory Data Files (MODF).
A third initiative is to enable coordinated evaluation of forecasts for the MOSAiC site Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models in near real time, MOSAiC-NRV.
