The Polar Prediction Project Societal and Economic Research and Applications (PPP-SERA) will organise an Antarctic Weather & Society Workshops as part of the YOPP Consolidation Phase to be held in conjunction with the WAMC, YOPP-SH meeting and the SCAR Open Science Conference in Hobart.
 
This full-day workshop held on 1 August 2020 at the venue of the SCAR OSC will address the overarching research question “How do we ensure that society benefits through applications of better weather programs and information services in the Polar regions?”
It aims to:
    •    Create dialogue between environmental forecasters, researchers and end-users from relevant projects and processes;
    •    Understand the role and relevance of environmental forecasting services in decision-making of diverse end-user groups operating in the Antarctic;
    •    Engage and learn from users and providers regarding on how best to tailor and co-produce WWIC services; and
    •    Assess the societal effects and implications of contributions made by PPP.

The workshop will adopt an interactive World-Café format and will bring together key stakeholders involved in using or producing environmental forecasts for the Antarctic and the Southern Ocean. The 2020 workshops on Antarctic Meteorology and Climate (WAMC) and on efforts for YOPP in the Southern Hemisphere (YOPP-SH) will be held from 29 to 31 July 2020 in Hobart, Tasmania.

Both meetings will be held just before the start of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) 2020 meeting. The 15th Workshop on Antarctic Meteorology and Climate will be focused on a variety of topics centered around Antarctic meteorological research and operational/logistical interests. Any presentations, workshop activities, and posters on these topics are welcome at the workshop. WAMC will be held at the CSIRO auditorium, Castray Esplanade, Battery Point, Hobart, Tasmania 7004, Australia.
 
As in previous years, the Year of Polar Prediction - Southern Hemisphere (YOPP-SH) meeting will occur in conjunction with WAMC. Also held at the CSIRO auditorium, the 5th YOPP-SH meeting will be focusing on the upcoming austral winter Special Observing Period.

A joint YOPP-APPLICATE session on "Exploiting Polar Observations to Improve Weather and Climate Predictions" will take place at this annually largest and most prominent European geosciences event.

To exchange knowledge and share results, we look forward to your abstract submission to our session “CL2.12 Exploiting Polar Observations to Improve Weather and Climate Predictions" at the upcoming EGU 2020 (Vienna | Austria | 3–8 May 2020).

We welcome presentations on activities and results from the YOPP and APPLICATE projects as well as contributions from other projects and institutes that focus on how to best capitalize on existing and additional Arctic and Antarctic observations such as Copernicus to improve forecast initial states, verification, and model physics, and to optimize the future polar observing system.

The Call for Abstracts is open until 15 Jan 2020, 13:00 CET.

The 2020 annual meeting of the PPP Task Team on Societal and Economic Research and Applications will be held from 20 to 24 April 2020 at the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven, Germany.

This year's PPP-SERA annual gathering will be organized by the International Coordination Office for Polar Prediction hosted by the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven, Germany. About ten to fifteen social scientists will meet for a week to discuss further actions to enhance stakeholder engagement within PPP with the goal to learn about requirements and demands by users of forecasts in polar regions. As in previous years, the highlight of the week will be a User Engagement Open Session that takes place on Wednesday, 22 April 2020. More information will follow.

The YOPP Science Workshop (17 to 19 February 2020) and the following 11th PPP Steering Group meeting (19 to 21 February 2020) will be held at the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven, Germany.

The YOPP Science Workshop will bring together a number of invited experts strongly involved in YOPP activities, including members of the PPP Steering Group, to discuss recent scientific advancements. During the PPP SG #11 meeting, the PPP Steering Group will review detailed progress in YOPP, identify success stories and define resulting actions and plans in view of the ongoing PPP Consolidation Phase and preparations to create a legacy of YOPP.
