Purpose

The YOPP modelling task team is one of several task teams that were established by the Polar Prediction Project (PPP) Steering Group (SG) in order to coordinate activities during the Year of Polar Prediction (YOPP).  The YOPP modelling team was set up to develop a plan for YOPP modelling activities, and to help coordinate activities, particularly between “operational centres” during the YOPP Core Phase.

YOPP Supersite Common Set of Model Output

In order to permit process-based evaluation and verification of numerical weather prediction (NWP) and climate models with observations from key locations in the Arctic, Antarctic and Third Pole, modeling centers are invited to participate in the YOPP super-site Model Intercomparison Project (YOPPsiteMIP). See the YOPPsiteMIP document

A Gridded Common Set of Model Output for YOPP

The gridded common set of model output should be read in conjunction with the YOPP modelling plan (YOPP, 2017), which describes plans for producing a set of YOPP reference datasets and running a variety of modelling experiments to address key scientific issues. This specification for YOPP common model output has been developed by the YOPP model task team, whilst taking into account the primary verification goals, as set out by the YOPP verification task team (Casati et al, 2017).

YOPP Modelling Plan

The first edition has now been published. This outlines plans for a set of reference modelling datasets that will support a range of YOPP scientific investigations, plus plans for modelling experiments that will be carried out during the YOPP Core Phase and Consolidation Phase.

Earlier Document Versions

A Common Set of Model Output for YOPP

In order to facilitate comparison between different models, and between model output and observations, all YOPP model experiments should include a standard set of model output diagnostics, which is set out in this document. This early version is now replaced by the two documents "YOPP Supersite Common Set of Model Output" and "A Gridded Common Set of Model Output for YOPP" (please see above).
